Sustainability Week is week-long slate of events held each year by the Town of Blacksburg in partnership with Virginia Tech and Sustainable Blacksburg, a local citizens’ group. This year, Sustainability Week will feature nearly 30 events.

Active Commute Celebration

Do you bike, walk or take the bus to work or school? Whether you’re a veteran active commuter, a beginner, or just want to learn about your options – come celebrate active commuting with us on Wednesday morning. Drop in anytime…we’ll be there until 1 p.m. *Kid/family friendly

Sustainability @ Market Day!

Blacksburg Farmer’s Market (100 Draper Rd.)
Come join local farmers and crafters at the Blacksburg Farmers Market. In addition to all the fine local foods you have come to enjoy on Wednesday Market Day, there will be sustainability-themed activities for kids of all ages: the Bag Monster, a participatory art experience (What Color Is Water), The Enviroscape Model, and a general info booth staffed by Sustainable Blacksburg volunteers. *Kid/family friendly

The Sustainability Week Team is bringing you nine great speakers who will present on their environmental/sustainability topic of expertise or passion. But they are only allowed 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. There will be a lot of content into one event with discussion and refreshments to follow. Featured topics include: Sustainable Blacksburg, Invasive Species, Beneficial Tree Species, Ticks, Citizen Climate Lobby, Making Energy From Food Waste, VT Campus Tree Canopy: An Opportunity for Carbon Sequestration, How Cows Can Save the Planet, and the Solar Decathlon.
Week Long Events: Sept. 16-24
Kids’ Activities Passport
This year for Sustainability Week we are offering something new – a passport to all the activities that are kid/family friendly. Kids who participate in at least four Sustainability Week activities (initialed by parent/teacher) will receive a special prize. Please visit the website and look for *kid/family friendly" to find all the fantastic events you and your kid can attend.
Passports can be picked up at the SEEDS Office/Price House Nature Center, 107 Wharton St., SE, the Blacksburg Children’s Museum, 1470 S. Main St., Suite 106, the YMCA Thrift Store, 1000 N Main St., or Imaginations Toy and Furniture, 1531 S. Main St. If you would like the passport emailed to you, please contact sustainability@blacksburg.gov. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent at all Sustainability Week events. Prizes for completed passports can be collected at any of the places where passports were distributed, or at the Town of Blacksburg Sustainability Office at 141 Jackson St.
