Sustainability Week is week-long slate of events held each year by the Town of Blacksburg in partnership with Virginia Tech and Sustainable Blacksburg, a local citizens’ group. This year, Sustainability Week will feature nearly 30 events.

Events for Friday, Sept. 22
Recycle Pop Up Shop at the Blacksburg Children’s Museum
Friday, 4-7 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
Blacksburg Children’s Museum, 1470 S. Main St., Suite 106
The Recycle Pop Up Shop is a place where children can create original artwork from recycled and surplus materials. Children and adults can collect materials from the shop and bring their ideas to life in the Art Center or at home. Please join come anytime for this fun drop-in event that will start on Friday afternoon and run through Sunday.

Farm, Solar, Food & Brews Gathering (aka Sustainability Hat Trick)

As Sustainability Week draws to a close, come for a fun and informative gathering at Glade Road Growing Farm and Rising Silo brewery. This place is truly a one-stop shop for all things sustainability. Pick up fresh veggies from the farm stand, sample some of Blacksburg’s locally brewed beer, and listen to some fantastic local musicians.
Glade Road Growing’s farming methods are based on building and maintaining soil health, biodiversity, and community involvement (read: fun). The intensive cultivation area only occupies about four acres, while the remaining 44 acres of the property are responsibly managed, part in rotational pasture and part in a managed riparian area of Tom’s Creek.
While you’re there, come tour the solar installation that powers the farm and brewery. You’ll be able to see and interact with the equipment and get a live demo of the energy monitoring system that shows how the solar and grid work together to supply electricity to the facility. The Baseline Solar team who designed and installed the system will lead the tour. *Kid/family friendly (note: alcohol and amplified music present)
Week Long Events: Sept. 16-24
Kids’ Activities Passport
This year for Sustainability Week we are offering something new – a passport to all the activities that are kid/family friendly. Kids who participate in at least four Sustainability Week activities (initialed by parent/teacher) will receive a special prize. Please visit the website and look for *kid/family friendly" to find all the fantastic events you and your kid can attend.
Passports can be picked up at the SEEDS Office/Price House Nature Center, 107 Wharton St., SE, the Blacksburg Children’s Museum, 1470 S. Main St., Suite 106, the YMCA Thrift Store, 1000 N Main St., or Imaginations Toy and Furniture, 1531 S. Main St. If you would like the passport emailed to you, please contact sustainability@blacksburg.gov. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent at all Sustainability Week events. Prizes for completed passports can be collected at any of the places where passports were distributed, or at the Town of Blacksburg Sustainability Office at 141 Jackson St.

A sequel to "An Inconvenient Truth," the follow-up documentary addresses the progress made to tackle the problem of climate change and global efforts to persuade governmental leaders to invest in renewable energy.
