The merchants of downtown Blacksburg and the Blacksburg Police Department are ready to welcome you for a safe and happy Halloween in the downtown area.
Once again this year the Blacksburg Police Department will promote their two year-round campaigns for the town - Blacksburg Be Safe (a K-12 initiative) and No Hokie Left Behind (College age initiative). College Avenue will be closed from Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2-8 p.m. Blacksburg Police will host a booth on College Avenue to pass out candy and safety materials.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will provide additional safety during the Trick or Treat session. Extra police officers assist in traffic calming and safe crossing.
Bright yellow caution tape will be attached to the lampposts along the west side of Main Street between College Avenue and Roanoke Street to prevent people stepping off the sidewalk into traffic. The cadets will assist with crossing Main Street at the Lee Street and Jackson Street pedestrian crossings. Police officers will assist with crossing Main Street at the Roanoke St and College Avenue intersections.
Downtown Trick or Treat Event Schedule
4-6 p.m.: Trick or Treating at participating downtown businesses between Eheart Street and Faculty Street.
5:30-6 p.m.: Costume Contest at the Lyric Theatre. Age groups: 0-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.
All participants will receive a Halloween goodie bag from Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. Prizes for group winners provided by downtown businesses.
Fun activities throughout the downtown area from 4-6 p.m. will include fun on College Avenue with Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., and Blacksburg Police Department. New Life will host a Fall Festival at 130 Jackson Street, Blacksburg Library will host Halloween crafting from 4:30 p.m. and Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center will feature two shows - The Forest and Blacksburg High School Student – Day of the Dead art exhibit.
