Service Project – Invasive Species at Stadium Woods
Come help us remove the invasive species that are threatening this stand of old growth forest right on the edge of VT Campus. Thorns aplenty so dress accordingly – close toed shoes are a must! If you have your own loppers/pruners and/or leather gloves, please bring them. Leaders from the NRV Master Naturalists will be on hand to provide history of stadium woods and guidance on the proper methods for invasive species removal.
Kid/family friendly but may not be suitable for families with younger children (i.e. poison ivy and lots of thorns). Please wear close toed shoes and appropriate clothing!
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Location/Directions: Stadium Woods, VT Campus – Park in the Maintenance Lot (football Lot 3) on Sterrett Street; parking permit not needed on Sundays, gather on pathway next to police station (leads to Stadium Woods).
Additional Information: Friends of Stadium Woods, NRV Master Naturalists. View event on Facebook.
The Last Plastic Straw Campaign
Every day in the U.S., people use 500 million straws a day – enough to circle to planet more than two-and-a-half times! Straws are now one of the top 10 marine debris items found on our beaches. And by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
Throughout the week we will be celebrating businesses who have pledged to lessen their straw use in 2018 and announcing new establishments that join us in ‘The Last Plastic Straw Blacksburg Restaurant Campaign’ to reduce community and global straw use.
