Come share your ideas! The forum is intended to provide a brief overview of our successful campus sustainability program and to encourage audience participation with sharing their ideas for continued improvement. Representatives from the Office of Sustainability, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Alternative Transportation will highlight current programs and initiatives, and explore future opportunities. But most importantly, we want to hear what sustainability ideas you have

Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation Launch Event
We are pleased to the launch event for the new Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation at Virginia Tech. This is a public event with program and reception featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Alice Julier, Associate Professor and Director of Food Studies at Chatham University. She is also the author of “Eating Together: Food, Friendship, and Inequality” and Director of The Center for Regional Agriculture, Food, and Transformation (CRAFT) at Chatham.

Climate Change Impacts – Local Ecology
Event Description: The New River Valley Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists will be hosting Dr. Cassidy Rist, who will be speaking on Global Climate Change and how that is affecting flora and fauna in our local ecology, including changes in diseases and how we can respond in the New River Valley. Dr. Rist is an Assistant Professor in Population Health Sciences at Virginia Tech. She has a Masters in Public Health with an emphasis in Global Epidemiology from Emory University and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Florida with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. She has had a varied work life, including working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Agriculture, before coming to Virginia Tech in 2016.

The Last Plastic Straw Campaign
Every day in the U.S., people use 500 million straws a day – enough to circle to planet more than two-and-a-half times! Straws are now one of the top 10 marine debris items found on our beaches. And by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
Throughout the week we will be celebrating businesses who have pledged to lessen their straw use in 2018 and announcing new establishments that join us in ‘The Last Plastic Straw Blacksburg Restaurant Campaign’ to reduce community and global straw use.
