Interfaith Prayer Walk + Potluck

Members of local faith communities and environmental organizations will guide participants on a walk downtown to sites of ecological significance, including the Blacksburg Farmers’ Market, SEEDS-Blacksburg Nature Center, and sites important to the local watershed. At each stop, a local expert will provide background on a particular environmental issue, such as water quality, and give participants ideas for ways they can help. A member of a local faith community will inform the group about the tenets of that faith’s commitment to environmental protection and lead a prayer about the highlighted issue. Along the way, we will begin our personal commitments by picking up trash. The walk will begin and end at Blacksburg United Methodist Church (BUMC). Anyone wishing to stay for a simple meal after the walk is invited to bring soup in a Crock Pot or a salad to the BUMC kitchen between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m.

Time: 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Location/Directions: Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church St SE. View event on Facebook

The Last Plastic Straw Campaign

Every day in the U.S., people use 500 million straws a day – enough to circle to planet more than two-and-a-half times! Straws are now one of the top 10 marine debris items found on our beaches. And by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

Throughout the week we will be celebrating businesses who have pledged to lessen their straw use in 2018 and announcing new establishments that join us in ‘The Last Plastic Straw Blacksburg Restaurant Campaign’ to reduce community and global straw use.
