**Announcement**
The Town did not receive any private applications for amendments to the Comprehensive Plan as part of the mid-way point update. Staff is currently deciding whether to complete any housekeeping-related updates in this cycle, and if so, will post more information about this at a later date.
What is the Comprehensive Plan?
The Comprehensive Plan is the community’s vision for Blacksburg’s future. This is the document that helps guide decision making in our community. The plan covers topics such as sustainability, housing, infrastructure and public services, economy, transportation, parks, and land use.
Updates to the Comprehensive Plan
In 2021, Town Council adopted the updated Comprehensive Plan. This plan incorporates feedback from multiple community engagement surveys. This update includes additions and revisions to each of the 11 topical chapters and introduction of the Plan. It also includes updated data and mapping in the chapters and a new chapter on Equity & Community Wellbeing.
As a follow-up to the updated plan, in December 2022 Town Council adopted an amendment specifically related to high density student housing as well as a small number of housekeeping items. The amendment included a new text section regarding High Density Student Housing Locations as part of the Land Use chapter, and a corresponding new map as part of the Land Use Map Series. The small housekeeping items included minor changes to the Housing chapter, the Transportation chapter, and the Future Land Use Map.
The Virginia State Code § 15.2-2230, requires comprehensive plans to be reviewed every five years by the local Planning Commission for necessary updates and amendments.
