 2024 Leaf Collection: October 21 - December 6

Loose and bagged leaves are collected each fall for town refuse and recycling customers. There will be Leaf pick-up crews in each of the four quadrants for the duration of leaf collection. Loose and bagged leaves will be collected, at the same time, in the East and West sides of Blacksburg, starting Monday October 21-Friday December 6. Heavily forested neighborhoods will be revisited the week of December 9.Leaf Collection

The number of leaf pick-ups will not change. However, instead of having a week on and a week off (east to west), each quadrant will have three, two-week windows, to put out their leaves, and a fourth week, for neighborhoods that have heavily forested areas.

November 4 - November 15
November 18 - November 29

December 2 - December 6

Once we come down your street, we will be back again in two weeks, making a total of 3 collections

December 2-6 we will revisit heavily forested areas.

Guidelines

  • Place leaves at the curb by  7:00 a.m. Monday October 21. Leaves may be bagged or piled
  • Remove all sticks and yard debris from piles and bags. Only leaves will be collected. Contaminated piles or bags of leaves will not be collected
  • To prevent loose leaves from blowing, cover piles with old sheets, blankets, or tarps weighted with stones or bricks
  • Leaf piles must not impede traffic
  • Leaf collection is for residential refuse and recycling customers only
  • Town crews will not collect leaves on private roads, private property, or in parking lots. Place leaf piles on the edge of the nearest public street

Collection dates are announced annually via the calendar, website and Citizens Alert, and our recycling app at www.blacksburg.gov/recycleapp.

Bagged leaves will be collected as time permits until February 1 each year. Please call 540-443-1200 to inform Public Works of your address and number of bags. Any bagged leaves remaining after February 1, will be collected during Spring and Fall Cleanup

Loose and Bagged Leaf Delivery

Loose and bagged leaves collected in the fall are available for free delivery to town residents. Residents may use these leaves as a soil additive and for composting. This service is important in order to keep leaves out of the landfill. Not only do leaves take up valuable landfill space, but the landfilling of such organic materials produces greenhouse gasses.

Please contact the Public Works department at 540-443-1200 or recycle@blacksburg.gov to arrange for a leaf delivery.
