HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY - SATURDAY August 10, 2024

 NRRA Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Residents served by the New River Resource Authority are invited to participate in the Regions HHW & Document Shredding Event , Saturday August 10, 2024.

Residents interested in this event will need to call NRRA at (540) 674-1677 to schedule an appointment.

Event will be held at the New River Resource Authority, 7100 Cloyd's Mtn. Road, Dublin, VA 9 AM - 1 PM.

NO COMMERCIAL WASTE or COMMERCIAL VEHICLES will be accepted for HHW

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY - SATURDAY November 9, 2024

The Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste event at their facility, located at 555 Authority Drive, Christiansburg Virginia from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday November 9th. Please call (540) 381-2820 to schedule an appointment. This event is open to all residents of Montgomery County.

No commercial waste or commercial vehicles will be permitted. This program is sponsored by MRSWA

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any unwanted household product labeled as flammable, toxic, corrosive, or reactive. The most common products include aerosols, anti-freeze, fertilizers, motor oil, paint supplies, photo chemicals, poisons, and solvents.

NO electronics, batteries, or paper shredding.

Unusable latex paint should be dried in its can using kitty litter or sand. Once dry, the entire can should be disposed of in the trash.

  • Oil based paint
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Stains and varnishes
  • Poisons, insecticides, fungicides, weed killer
  • Wood preservatives
  • Chemical fertilizers
  • Paint strippers and thinners
  • Moth balls
  • Solvents
  • Adhesives
  • Flea control products
  • Lighter fluid
  • Rubber cement
  • Airplane glue
  • Fuels, gasoline, kerosene, diesel
  • Antifreeze
  • Engine degreaser
  • Fiberglass resins
  • Brake fluid
  • Photo chemicals
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Furniture polish
  • Transmission fluid
  • Floor and metal polish
  • Car wax and polishes
  • Oven cleaner
  • Driveway sealer

What NOT to bring:

  • Empty paint cans
  • Empty containers
  • Trash
  • Commercial or industrial waste
  • Agricultural waste
  • Radioactive waste
  • Smoke detectors
  • Infectious or biological waste
  • Ammunition, fireworks, explosives
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Syringes
  • Propane containers 
  • Asbestos
  • Animal carcasses
  • Prescription and over the counter medication
  • Batteries
  • Fluorescent light tubes
  • Electronics- computers, TV's, monitors, etc.

Tips for identifying Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):

  • Corrosives: labels usually state, “AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN OR EYES”
  • Flammables: labels usually state, “KEEP AWAY FROM FLAMES”
  • Toxic materials: labels often contain the skull and crossbones and usually state, “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN”
  • Oxidizers: labels usually state, “STRONG OXIDIZER”

Tips for transporting HHW safely:

  • Leave materials in original containers
  • Tighten caps and lids
  • Sort and pack into separate categories (e.g. household cleaners, pesticides, and fuels)
  • Pack containers in sturdy upright boxes and pad with newspaper
  • Never mix chemicals
  • Never smoke while handling HHW
